You’ve got to be crazy not to drive out to
Apache Junction to try this great Mexican restaurant. The atmosphere is
lively and friendly, and the food is fresh and tasty.
Los Gringos Locos was started in December 2002 by two couples new to the
restaurant business. Locos, you say? With some sheer determination and a
collection of great managers, cooks, and servers, they’re not as crazy as
one might think.
The big, bright room with hand-painted murals welcomes families, couples
and groups. The owners are welcoming and make sure they visit your table
often to ensure everything is just perfect. There is a separate bar and
patio, which has live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights
You’ll start out with the house-made salsas, which are made fresh daily by
the “salsa lady.” There’s a spicy one made with six different chilies and
a fresh, chunky one. Both are addictive. The appetizer list is
comprehensive, but a standout is the poquito platter, which comes with
taquitos, mini chimis, and poppers. Or, try some fresh guacamole prepared
tableside.
The soups are outstanding. The albondigas is full of veggies and meatballs
with just enough kick to make it interesting. The chicken tortilla soup is
hearty with chunks of chicken and veggies, topped with tortilla strips,
shredded cheese, and avocado.
For main courses, there are tacos, enchiladas, burritos and tamales, all
available individually or as part of a combination platter. The tamales,
red with shredded pork or green corn are fluffy, tasty and exquisite.
Other entrée specials include a healthy option -- grilled mahi with a
zesty mango salsa and whole pinto beans. Sizzling fajitas can be had with
chicken, beef, shrimp, portabella mushroom, or a combination. The marinade
they use is excellent!
Save room for dessert – the homemade flan is the best around and the
xangos, tortillas stuffed with cheesecake and then deep-fried – are
completely decadent. Los Gringos Locos also serves locally produced
SodaWerks Ice Cream.
